How do I make my voice heard in Augusta?

We work hard to elect Democrats to the Legislature. Once they’re in office, we need to work equally hard to support their efforts to enact regulations, laws and policy consistent with our Democratic values. That’s where advocacy comes in.

Special WCDC Event – Activism and Coffee Workshop in Belfast on Saturday, May 20, 10:30am

Join the Waldo County Dems for activism and coffee at a workshop with Rep. Jan Dodge and Megan Marquis, former MDP Field Organizer in Waldo County. This workshop will empower you to prepare and submit testimony on a bill YOU care about this legislative session. You’ll choose an issue you’re passionate about and we’ll help you identify related bills, craft your message, and submit your testimony online in real time, right at the workshop. You’ll learn how to write persuasive testimony and who to send it to, and enjoy some time together with like-minded friends and neighbors. You can bring your own laptop or other device, or use one of ours, with free internet available. Join us at Social Capital, 28 Spring Street in Belfast, on May 20th at 10:30am. Light refreshments provided. Email info@waldocountydemocrats.com with questions.

Our local legislators are eager to hear from you about proposed legislation. There are several ways to make your voice heard.

  • Contact your State Legislator directly. You can find their mailing address, email address, and phone number on our Elected Officials page.
  • Learn about this session’s bills, legislative committees, and public hearings at https://legislature.maine.gov/.
  • Testify in Augusta in support or opposition to proposed legislation that affects you and your community. You can appear in person or by Zoom, or in writing. We’ve provided tips on preparing and submitting your testimony on our Advocacy page.
  • If you are REALLY into the work of a committee, you can go to go to a specific committee’s page (find them at https://legislature.maine.gov/committee/#Committees/ACF) and click on Mailing List to sign up to receive updates on that committee’s work. You can also do this by calling the Clerk of the committee and ask them to sign you up.

Remember, even if your district’s legislator isn’t a Democrat, you’re still their constituent and they should listen to your concerns. Also, look for opportunities to thank a legislator who is doing a good job and supports a bill you believe in.
