What are caucuses and why do we have them?
Caucuses are gatherings of Democrats from each town and city in Maine that serve as a kick-off to the election cycle. They take place every even-numbered year to rally Democrats and organize for the upcoming elections. This cycle, Maine’s Democratic caucuses are taking place on February 3 or 4, 2024.
Caucuses bring local Democrats together to meet with candidates, find out about ways to volunteer, and talk about how we’re going to win elections up and down the ballot. We also take care of party business, such as electing local leadership, county committee members, and state convention delegates. Caucuses represent grassroots organizing at its finest!
Each town’s Democrats caucus together as a group, but the meeting may take place in a shared location with another town. The Democrats in one town can vote to form a regional committee with a neighboring town’s Democrats, to join forces and elect one set of leaders. Several towns in Waldo County have joined together this way.
Democrats who want to go to the Maine Democratic Convention in Bangor on May 31-June 1 should attend their town’s caucus and run for a delegate position. Each town has a certain number of convention delegate positions. The state convention delegates vote on the party platform, elect delegates to the National Democratic Convention, and take care of other party business. Who can attend a caucus?
Anyone registered as a Democrat in that town may attend the town’s caucus. (That includes 17-year-olds who are going to be 18 by Election Day.) If you’re not already a registered voter or if you’re not registered as a Democrat, be sure to take care of that ahead of time at your town office. Please note that election clerks are no longer legally required to attend caucuses to register voters as they were in past years, so it’s important to make sure you’re a registered Dem ahead of time! Other people may attend your local caucus as guests:
· Local Democratic candidates try to attend all the caucuses in their district. This is your chance to meet the candidates and get to know them, ask questions, and volunteer for their campaigns. Candidates may ask for your signature on ballot petitions or for a $5 clean elections contribution.
· Waldo County Democratic Committee members may be there to talk about what the committee does and how to be involved in campaigns. The County Committee works year-round to support candidates, from local select board members and County Commissioners to State Legislators and right up to the President. · Organizations working to get a referendum question on the ballot may also attend caucuses to ask for your signature or for volunteers to help collect signatures.
What happens if there’s bad weather the day of my caucus?
We’ll announce any weather cancellations right here on this page. If you RSVP using one of the links above, you’ll get an email or text notice about cancellations. In most cases, the caucuses will be rescheduled for the same time and place one week later. Check back here the day of your caucus to make sure!
